{"id":725,"date":"2004-12-02T03:59:33","date_gmt":"2004-12-02T01:59:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sholeh.calmstorm.net\/word\/archives\/725"},"modified":"2004-12-02T03:59:33","modified_gmt":"2004-12-02T01:59:33","slug":"sunset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sholeh.calmstorm.net\/blog\/archives\/725","title":{"rendered":"Sunset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started to forget the colors in a sunset.<br \/>\nOf course I see the stereotypical gradients in my mind,<br \/>\nlikely placed there by television or National Geographic.<br \/>\nIt isn&#8217;t quite real, though.<br \/>\nHere, the skies are cloudy or full of smog<br \/>\nshocking to the eyes, ruining the effect.<br \/>\nI am lucky if I find space between buildings<br \/>\nto catch a glimpse of the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>The most indelible memory of dusk is from childhood.<br \/>\nMy bedroom window, facing west, filled with an orange glow.<br \/>\nI would squint my eyes as I tried to fall asleep<br \/>\nin South Carolina summer evenings<br \/>\nwith the sun staring me in the face.<\/p>\n<p>And then the sinking down over the Illinois prairie,<br \/>\nwith nothing but sky and grass and the occasional tree,<br \/>\nlonely without its usual entourage.<br \/>\nFor some reason, the sunset seems longer on the prairie,<br \/>\n<i>stretched<\/i> across a wider frame.<\/p>\n<p>I am starved for beauty of the natural sort, here.<br \/>\nExcept for a large body of water<br \/>\nthat I pass at high speeds,<br \/>\nbarely glancing over.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started to forget the colors in a sunset.
